Sufi Poetry

When the Curtain Falls

Drunk by you, from the goblet and wine I am free.
Captured by you, from the seed and snare I am free.
You are my goal in the Kaaba and the idol temple,
Otherwise, from both of these places I am free.

The primordial secrets neither you know nor I.
The words of the puzzle neither you can read nor I.
Your discourse and mine are behind the curtain.
When the curtain falls, neither you remain nor I.

– Shaykh Abul Hasan al-Kharqani.

Shaykh Abul Hasan is the 7th Master in the Naqshbandi Golden Chain – refer to the ‘Sufism’ section > ‘The Golden Chain’ for his biography.
