The Golden Chain

A fruit bearing tree

Shaykh Muhammad Nazim Adil al-Haqqani ar-Rabbani (may God sanctify his innermost being), the fortieth Shaykh in the Naqshbandi Golden Chain, said the following:-

Our Grandshaykh used to say to elderly people, “How are you filling your days? Don’t waste time, but strive to weave time and space with skill so that you will leave an enduring legacy behind you and be honoured here and in the hereafter.”

For followers of the Sufi Way, wasting time either idly or in useless activity is to be avoided. Guard your vital energy and your valuable time: make every moment live.

In the morning you must make your intention, and at night, after having gone on your way all day long, you must take account of your actions: “Am I now as I hoped to be when I made my intention in the morning? Am I a little better than when I started the day? Have today’s actions been for or against me – profit or loss?”

This method is an essential instrument of self-examination, a pillar of our individual practice, a fruit-bearing tree, and a way to keep ourselves spiritually clean.
